always new projects to
keep me challenged. I work very close to home which is great.
I never have to worry about commuter traffic and I get to
come home every day for lunch with Amanda.
About Amanda
I am the oldest of three children.
As a kid, my parents believed in keeping us active, so I
joined everything from figure skating and tap dancing to
brownies, swimming and piano lessons. We had a big corner
lot, and all the neighborhood kids would play in our back
yard. My brother, sister and I were close in age, so there
was always someone to play with. Our parents encouraged
our love of the outdoors and often took us camping. We began
travelling on family vacations at a young age, and travel
has been one of my passions since.
After university graduation, my
sister and I back-packed with some friends across Europe.
I loved it so much that I took a one-year position as a
nanny in Switzerland where I looked after four children.
I taught them Canadian games and songs and they taught me
how to speak French. It was a wonderful experience. I returned
to Canada and over the next ten years I worked as a Project
Manager at two large corporations and enjoyed my work very
much. Today I run my own business and have the good fortune
to work from my home office. I started my business so that
we could have a more flexible lifestyle. I wanted to have
the best of both worlds - to stay home and care for a family
one day, and to stay connected with the working world. It’s
fabulous!
In my spare time I enjoy hanging out with
my friends – girls I met in high school who after
20 years still make me laugh. I’ve never been one
to hit the gym, but I do love my yoga classes. I also volunteer
as a driver for the Canadian Cancer Society transporting
patients to their hospital treatments. It’s something
I have done for several years and makes me happy.
Our Family
We are both very close to our families
and spend much of our free time with them. Between us we
have 14 nieces and nephews. They range in age from one to
twenty-five. Recently we took our nephews to the zoo and
witnessed the birth of a baby buffalo. It was amazing!
We have some family traditions that we
look forward to each season. In the summer we enjoy weekends
of boating, camping and cottaging. There’s nothing
better than a day of swimming, canoeing, fishing off the
dock and then enjoying the campfire. In the fall we go apple
picking at a local farm where the kids love the hay ride
and candy apples. (So do the grown-ups!) On New Year’s
Eve, our family rents the local ice-rink and enjoys an afternoon
of skating and hot chocolate.
We also love to travel and look forward
to those few weeks every year when we begin to plan our
next vacation. Travelling gives us the chance to meet new
people, and try new foods and activities. We both took annual
trips with our families as kids and the love of vacationing
has been with us since. We would like to pass on the love
of travelling to our own family one day.
We were raised Catholic and though we
both drifted from the church in our twenties like typical
young people, as adults we have become active participants
in our church community.
Open Adoption
We have several adult members of
our family who are themselves adopted. We have learned through
their experiences that they wish they knew more about their
birth families. Luckily, the adoption world has changed
in this regard and now through open adoption children have
the opportunity to learn about the story of their birth
parents and the circumstances under which they were adopted.
We hope to enjoy an open relationship
with you. We’d like to be in contact and share photos,
email updates and even have visits if you would like. We
welcome the chance to talk with you about your thoughts
on an open adoption relationship.
We hope that after reading this letter
you have a vision of who we are and what life might be like
for the special child that may one day call us parents.
We look forward to fulfilling our dream to have a family
to share our wonderful life with.
Sincerely,
Amanda & Gerry
