In Newfoundland and Labrador,
there are three different types of adoption that
prospective adoptive parents can pursue: public,
private and international.
Newfoundland's Department of
Health and Community Services is responsible for
facilitating adoptions for children who are in
the care of the government. Most of the children
are older and/or have special needs. There are
some infants available for adoption.
At present, there are no licensed
private adoption agencies, but this type of adoption
can still be arranged. In most cases, expectant
parents making an adoption plan for their child
know the adoptive family prior to placement. In
order for this adoption to occur, the adoptive
family must have a home study completed and be
approved by Newfoundland and Labrador's Director
of Adoption. Birth parents can also work with
the Department of Health and Community Services
and choose an adoptive family from profiles of
approved waiting families.
Families in Newfoundland and
Labrador can also adopt internationally. There
are no licensed adoption agencies in the province
but this type of adoption can still be arranged
with the assistance of the Department of Health
and Community Services and an out of province
licensed adoption agency.
